House hunting, i figured can be an interesting experience in itself, more importantly to gauge peoples aesthetics. As is the process in order to find the most suitable abode, we checked several places, mostly apartments. Some big and thus not fitting into our meager budget, some apt in terms of budget but with enough sunlight for a bats nest etc etc.
At this point would like to advice ye all house hunters, its always best to check the place during the daytime, unless you have a fascination for caves and dungeons as dwellings!
And there were some which were lovingly painted (as admitted by the landlady herself) with the brightest shade of yellow, constant exposure to which would evoke the carefully repressed psychopath in you. And the fans, yes the ceiling fans, had chandeliers reminiscent of 1980s hindi movie abodes more apt for a white shoe clad jumping jack Jeetu, a la Farz!
And then, there were the ones which were perfect in terms of budget, space and light and....;
but were still consigned to the rejection list. Take a look at them yourselves to see why.
And for those of you who still can't figure that out, please take this advice from a dear friend; DO NOT ever try to do up your house on your own!!

LOL. We had exactly the same experience while house hunting recently- there were some houses that fit in our budget and idea of an ideal house- but when we entered the house, to my horror, each room was painted in different colours! One was parrot green, the kitchen was a shocking pink and the drawing room a bright orange! What can I say? The owner was so proudly showing us around, that I almost felt pity for him ! :D
This took me back to my own experiences with house-hunting. This was when we were going around selecting a house for ourselves. It was very exciting indeed. Everyone wants to have a house of their dreams. But the laws of economics and what Alfred Marhsal said always tends to define what we finally settle with. Rather, I would correct myself by saying that our house is a home and its character comes with the warmth and comfort it can provide to its inmates and guests. No matter how small or big it is it is has a life of its own . It can feel and sense the joys and sorrows of its inmates as much as it guards and shelters them. So once we decide on the best buy after a long and careful search, we need to care and pamper it like our own loved ones. Its beauty and upkeep reflects our own state of mind.
One can take cheer from a bollywood film, I think it was 'Dil to Pagal Hai', which says God has made that special person for each one of us, somewhere in this world. With time we will find him/her. Similarly we also find the house of our dreams . You just have to set your heart to it.
Did I get too philosophical, Rajib ? Your point was the aestheics part of it. In that case its best to get a fresh white-washed house. That leaves a lot of room for creative satisfaction for artistes like you .
